3D Printing

I create 3D-printed objects with my Qidi X-pro printer using Qidi Print slicer software and Adobe Photoshop’s 3D workspace. Here are just a few examples of objects that I have made using this emerging technology.

In March 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, I started printing face shield head bands to give to health care providers and essential workers. The designs were provided by the University of Michigan College of Engineering.

In addition to the face shield parts, I printed face mask adjusters. Also called “ear savers,” these are clips worn around the back of the neck to fasten and tighten face mask straps. They prevent the pain resulting from mask straps being worn around the ears for an extended period of time.

I dropped off 14 face shields and 42 face mask adjusters at the University of Michigan Hospital. I left 13 face shields out on our front porch for the Detroit Fire Department to pick up. And I dropped off 10 face shields and 23 face mask adjusters with custodians at Wayne State University.

Throughout this whole process, I discovered and found comfort in the fact that there is an online network of local, national, and global volunteer “makers” that can be depended upon to print 3D objects in times of a crisis or supply shortage.
